Wishbone, Y Chair

The Y Chair was created by the celebrated Danish designer Hans J. Wegner in 1950. Wegner was a pivotal figure in the Danish modern movement, which emphasized functionality, minimalism, and high-quality craftsmanship. His design philosophy was simple yet profound: a chair should be beautiful from all angles, as it often stands alone in a room.

First introduced in 1950, the Wishbone Chair is officially known as the CH24 chair. Its most distinctive feature is the Y-shaped backrest, which not only provides excellent support but also gives the chair its unique and recognizable silhouette. This backrest is the origin of the chair’s nickname – the Wishbone Chair.

The Y-shaped backrest is both a structural and visual centerpiece. It offers ergonomic support to the lower back, ensuring comfort without compromising on style.

The frame is typically made from solid wood such as oak, walnut, or cherry, and the seat is hand-woven from durable paper cord. The production process involves over 100 steps, many of which are completed by skilled artisans. This meticulous craftsmanship guarantees the chair’s longevity and quality.

The Y Chair represents the designer chair in the last century.
