The history of the LC3 Sofa

The LC3 sofa, also known as the "Grand Modèle" or "Grand Confort" sofa, is another iconic mid-century modern design classic created by the renowned French architect and designer, Le Corbusier, in collaboration with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and designer Charlotte Perriand.

Introduced in 1929, the LC3 sofa builds upon the innovative structural design of its predecessor, the LC2 sofa. Like the LC2, the LC3 features a sturdy, tubular steel frame that supports a series of plush, removable cushions. However, the LC3 takes this design a step further, with a longer and more expansive silhouette that allows for a more generous seating area.

One of the key features that distinguishes the LC3 from the LC2 is its modular construction. The sofa is comprised of individual, interchangeable elements, including the seat, back, and armrests, which can be combined in various configurations to suit different spatial and functional needs. This modular approach not only allows for greater customization, but also enhances the sofa's overall versatility and adaptability.

In addition to its innovative construction, the LC3 sofa is also renowned for its exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. The frame is typically crafted from polished chrome or brushed stainless steel, while the cushions are upholstered in high-quality, supple leather or fabric. This commitment to quality materials and manufacturing has helped cement the sofa's status as a true design icon.
